WCA Scramble Notation — How to Read It and Enter It Into Cube Resolver
WCA competition scrambles use Singmaster notation. Understanding the notation helps you enter a scramble into the tool, read cross/F2L suggestions, and practice with the correct standard.
Faces and basic notation
- R — turn the Right face 90° clockwise (viewed from that face).
- R' (R prime) — turn the Right face 90° counter-clockwise.
- R2 — turn the Right face 180°.
- Same idea for L, U, D, F, B (Left, Up, Down, Front, Back).
WCA scramble rules
A standard competition scramble is usually 20 moves long. Two consecutive moves can't turn the same face (e.g. no R followed immediately by R' — the generator avoids this). Cube Resolver generates scrambles using the same kind of rules when you click New scramble.
Entering a custom scramble
On CFOP - Cube Resolver, paste your
sequence into the input field (e.g. R U R' U' F2 D L) and click
Apply. The tool will scramble the cube and suggest an optimal cross
for that state.
You can also share a scramble via URL, for example:

Tips for practicing with scrambles
- Read the scramble left to right, applying each move to a solved cube.
- Use inspection to pick your cross direction before starting the timer.
- Compare the 6 cross directions on the app — train your eye to spot the Min direction.
